Breadcrumb markup that disagrees with the trail on the page

Breadcrumbs show where a page sits. Markup that lists a different trail asks search to display a path the reader cannot walk.

Breadcrumb markup should be the visible path, generated once, with working links to each parent.

Make the visible trail the source

Generate BreadcrumbList JSON-LD from the same items the page renders. A hardcoded Home → Blog trail on a service page will not match what the visitor sees.

Each item needs a name and, except sometimes the current page, a URL that returns 200. The last item should be the page itself.

Keep the trail short and true

Home, section, page is enough for most guides. Do not insert categories the site does not have just to add keywords. A breadcrumb is a path, not a keyword list.

If the site has two legitimate paths to a page, pick the one you want in search and use it consistently in both the links and the markup.

  • Same items in HTML and JSON-LD.
  • Working URLs on parent items.
  • Current page as the final item.

Check a deep page, not the homepage

The homepage rarely needs a breadcrumb. A third-level guide is where errors show: wrong parent, a trailing duplicate, or a URL on a staging host.

Validate one page per template. A shared component either works everywhere or breaks everywhere.

Questions

Do breadcrumbs help SEO?

They clarify structure for readers and can appear in search results. They help when they reflect the real information architecture.

Should every page include breadcrumb schema?

Use it where a real trail is shown. Do not invent a trail for pages that are not part of a hierarchy.
