GEO basics: make your expertise easier for AI to cite
Generative search does not reward vague authority. It needs a source with clear entities, explainable claims, and enough context to reuse safely.
Citation readiness is the discipline of turning expertise into clear, bounded, reusable answers.
Think in quotable units
When an answer engine assembles a response, it needs small pieces it can understand. A page with one long, elegant argument may be enjoyable to read but difficult to quote. Break important ideas into clear sections with descriptive headings and direct definitions.
A quotable unit answers one question, names its subject, and makes its boundary clear. If a claim depends on a specific market, audience, or time period, say so. Specificity is a form of trust.
- Define specialist terms before using them as shorthand.
- Keep one main claim per paragraph or callout.
- Place the subject and location near the claim when local context changes the answer.
Make the source trail visible
AI systems look for signals that a statement comes from a real, coherent source. Your organisation name, service names, people, locations, and areas of expertise should be written consistently across your site and the sites that mention you.
This does not mean repeating a brand name mechanically. It means removing ambiguity. A clear About page, a well-scoped service page, and a useful external mention should reinforce the same identity.
Answer the follow-up before it is asked
The most useful GEO content anticipates the next question. If you explain what a service is, add who it is for, what it includes, what it does not include, and how someone can assess fit. This gives the reader a better experience and gives answer systems more complete material to work with.
Treat each guide as a small reference document. Link to the deeper page when a reader needs proof or action, rather than trying to force every detail into one article.
