Meta description issues that waste the snippet

Search does not rank a page because of its meta description. It does use the description, sometimes, as the advertisement under the title.

A meta description is the optional snippet you would be happy to see under the title. Make it true and specific.

Treat duplicates as a template fault

If hundreds of URLs share one description, the field is hardcoded or falling back to a single slogan. Readers cannot tell results apart, and you have given up the one sentence you control.

Empty descriptions are less harmful than misleading ones. Search will quote the page. A wrong description that promises a discount or a district you do not serve will earn the click and lose the trust.

Write the sentence a result should show

Say what the page helps the reader do, and the boundary if the topic is easy to misunderstand. Two descriptions in one section should not be interchangeable.

Do not repeat the title word for word. The snippet has room for the outcome, the audience, or the local constraint the title could not fit.

  • Unique description per important URL.
  • Match the page that is actually published.
  • Skip keyword lists separated by commas.

Accept that search may rewrite it

Query-specific snippets are normal. A good description still matters for the queries that match the page’s main intent, and for social previews that do honour the tag.

Review rewritten snippets only when they are consistently wrong. That usually means the page’s opening paragraphs are off-topic, not that the description needs more keywords.

Questions

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not as a direct ranking factor. They influence how the result reads, which can change whether a person clicks the listing that already ranks.

What if search ignores the meta description?

That is common when another sentence on the page matches the query better. Improve the opening answer if the chosen snippet is misleading.
