Orphan pages: URLs search can barely reach
An orphan page has no internal link pointing at it. If a human cannot click to it, a crawler has to rely on luck or an old sitemap entry.
Every page worth indexing needs a human-visible link from a page that already has a job.
Find URLs that the site itself does not acknowledge
Compare three lists: URLs in the crawl that were reached by links, URLs in the sitemap, and URLs receiving impressions. Anything in the sitemap or in analytics that the crawl never reached by a link is an orphan candidate.
Some orphans are intentional, such as campaign landing pages. Most are drafts, old campaigns, or pages launched from a CMS without being added to a hub.
Give every important URL a contextual link
Add the page to the hub a reader would already be using: a service index, a guide, or a related article. The anchor should say what the page is for, not 'read more'.
A sitemap submission is a backup, not a substitute. Internal links tell both readers and crawlers that the page belongs in the site.
- Link from the parent topic, not only the footer.
- Use an anchor that names the destination.
- Remove sitemap entries for pages you do not want indexed.
Decide which orphans should stay unpublished
If nobody should find the page, noindex it or take it down and drop it from the sitemap. Leaving it orphaned and indexable creates a URL search may still surface in odd queries.
Recheck the crawl after the links ship. The fix is confirmed when the URL is reached by a path of ordinary links from the homepage.
Questions
Can a sitemap fix orphan pages?
A sitemap can help discovery, but it does not replace internal links. Pages that are only in a sitemap are weakly connected and easy to ignore.
Are unlinked landing pages always a problem?
Campaign URLs can stay unlinked on purpose. They should usually be noindexed if they repeat a page that is already in the site, so they do not compete with it.
