Search intent mismatch: ranking for a query the page does not serve

Intent mismatch is what happens when the query wants a comparison, a definition, or a local provider, and the page offers a different job.

Pick the query whose current results look like the page you can honestly publish, then lead with that job.

Read the results before you rewrite the prose

Search the query and note what the leading results are: a tool, a definition, a category page, a local pack, a video. Your page cannot argue its way into a format the query does not want.

Look at your own landing page in Search Console. High impressions and a very low click rate, or a quick bounce after the click, often mean the promise and the page disagree.

Change the page type or change the query you claim

If the query deserves a different format, build that format or retarget the page at the query it already satisfies. Adding a paragraph of the missing keyword to a sales page will not turn it into a guide.

Match the first screen to the intent. A definition query needs the definition immediately. A commercial query needs the offer, the fit, and the next step, not a history of the industry.

  • Classify the query: learn, compare, buy, visit, or do.
  • Align the opening answer with that job.
  • Stop targeting queries whose results you cannot honestly join.

Measure the query you rewrote for

After the change, filter Search Console to the query. You want a better click rate and, if the format now matches, a more stable position. Traffic from a different, accidental query is not the goal.

Keep a note of queries you decided not to chase. That list stops the next brief from dragging the page back off course.

Questions

Can one page satisfy two intents?

Only when they are steps in the same decision. A definition and a local booking can coexist if both are genuinely handled. Two unrelated jobs should be two URLs.

Why does a page get impressions but almost no clicks?

The title or the result type may not match what people expected, or the page is present but not the format searchers choose. Read the live results for that query.
