URL parameter indexing: tracking tags that become extra pages

A parameter that does not change the document should not create a new indexable URL. Campaign tags are the usual culprit.

Tracking parameters belong on inbound campaign links, not in the canonical site.

List the parameters the site actually emits

Sort, search, session, currency, and utm parameters show up in crawls when templates copy them into internal links. Once an internal link carries utm_source, you have published a duplicate of every page on the site.

External campaigns can still use tagged URLs. The failure is letting those tags persist in navigation and canonicals after the landing click.

Strip tracking parameters from the indexable URL

Canonical tags should point at the clean URL. Internal links should be clean. A short redirect from known tracking parameters to the clean URL stops the duplicate from being a destination.

Keep parameters that genuinely change the content only if that view deserves to be a page. Everything else is a variant.

  • Never copy utm parameters into internal links.
  • Self-canonicalise the clean URL.
  • Redirect common tracking variants if they are being indexed.

Check canonicals on landing pages

A landing template that builds the canonical from the requested URL, parameters included, undoes the rest of the cleanup. The canonical should be written from the route, not from the raw request.

Re-crawl a tagged URL and confirm the declared canonical is clean and that internal links on the page do not reintroduce the tag.

Questions

Do utm parameters create duplicate content?

They can, if those URLs are linked internally or returned without a canonical to the clean URL. The pages are copies with extra query strings.

Should parameters be listed in Search Console?

Fix canonicals and internal links first. Old parameter tools are not a substitute for a clean URL on the page itself.
