ChatGPT search visibility: show up as a source, not as a rumour

ChatGPT’s browsing and search features cite pages they can fetch. Visibility there depends on a clear public page, not on a prompt you bury on your site.

To be visible in ChatGPT search, publish a fetchable page that answers the customer’s question in the first lines.

Ask the questions your customers ask

Test prompts that include the service and Hong Kong, not only your brand name. Note whether you are cited, named without a link, or confused with another firm.

A brand query that returns your homepage only proves the entity is known. A problem query that cites a guide proves the guide is usable.

Give the crawler a complete document

Pages that require a login, a script, or a blocked user-agent will not be the citation. Serve the answer in HTML and do not disallow the crawlers you hope will cite you, unless you have decided not to be included.

Keep titles and headings specific. A chat tool summarises the page it fetched, and a vague H1 becomes a vague citation.

  • Test problem prompts, not only the brand.
  • HTML visible without a login.
  • A stable URL for the guide you want cited.

Improve the page the tool should have used

If a thinner competitor is cited, compare passages. They probably answered in the first lines. Rewrite your opening. Do not publish a page aimed at ‘ChatGPT SEO’ that never answers a customer question.

Re-test after the page is recrawled. Chat tools cache. A change this morning may not be the citation tonight.

Questions

Can you pay to be cited in ChatGPT?

Not as a reliable public mechanism. Citations follow what the tool can retrieve and judge useful. Treat paid inclusion claims with scepticism.

Does ranking on Google guarantee a ChatGPT citation?

No. The systems overlap and still choose differently. A page can rank and be passed over for a clearer explanation.
