Perplexity citations: why some guides are quoted and others are skipped

Perplexity shows its sources. That makes it a practical test of whether your page is citable, not a separate ranking universe.

Treat Perplexity as a public citation test: if a thinner page is quoted, make your passage clearer than theirs.

Use it as a citation audit

Ask a precise question you have answered in a guide. If Perplexity cites a competitor, open both pages and compare the first paragraph under the relevant heading.

Note whether your URL is blocked, slow, or thin in the raw HTML. A source list cannot include a document the fetcher never received.

Match the way the answer is assembled

Perplexity prefers pages that state a fact with enough context to stand alone. A comparison with criteria, a definition with a limit, and a dated statistic are easier to attach a footnote to than a brand story.

Keep the claim on a stable URL. If you rewrite by deleting the old guide, you strand the citation.

  • Compare your opening answer with the cited page.
  • Keep the claim in HTML.
  • Use a URL you intend to maintain.

Do not write for the footnote alone

A page stuffed with ‘according to studies’ and no study is less citable, not more. Name the method or the source you actually have.

Re-test a month later on the same prompt. The goal is to become a reasonable source, not to appear for a single cached answer.

Questions

How do you get cited by Perplexity?

Publish a fetchable page that answers the question directly and is allowed to be crawled. There is no submission form that creates a citation.

Should you create a page for every Perplexity prompt?

No. Improve the guide that already matches the question. A new thin page per prompt adds noise.
