Duplicate location pages: the same offer with a new place name
Location pages become doorway pages when the only unique word is the district. Search filters them, and customers can tell.
If two location pages become the same document when you delete the place names, publish one of them.
Compare the pages with the place names removed
If the documents become identical, they are duplicates. The fix is to merge them into one service or service-area page and redirect the copies.
A branch with its own hours, staff, and entrance is not a duplicate. Keep that page and strip the fake ones around it.
Stop the template from minting districts
Some site builders generate a page per city from a spreadsheet. Turn that generator off for Hong Kong districts you cannot describe. Add a page only through an editorial check.
Remove the cloned URLs from the sitemap and internal links, or the crawl will keep them alive after you stop caring.
- Merge pages that only swap a place name.
- Keep genuine branch pages.
- Delete the generator that created the clones.
Redirect with a map, not with hope
Each retired district URL should 301 to the surviving service or branch page. A mass redirect to the homepage throws away the small amount of intent those URLs had.
Tell sales which URLs died so old proposals do not keep circulating the doorway links.
Questions
Are location pages bad for SEO?
No. Fake ones are. A page that documents a real branch or a real constraint is ordinary local SEO.
What should happen to the old doorway URLs?
Redirect each one to the closest real page, drop them from the sitemap, and remove internal links to them.
