Hong Kong hreflang: pair en-HK and zh-HK only when both pages exist

Hreflang for Hong Kong should connect two real versions of the same document. It should not point an English page at a Chinese homepage.

Use en-HK and zh-HK as a pair of equivalent, indexable pages, each canonicalising to itself.

Use the region when the page is for this market

en-HK and zh-HK tell search the pages are for Hong Kong, not for a generic English or Chinese audience. Use them when the content is actually localised: currency, examples, and wording.

A global English page aimed at several countries should not wear an en-HK tag just to chase local rankings.

Return the tags on both URLs

Each page lists itself and its partner. The Chinese page must point back. Canonicals stay on each language’s own URL.

Check for pages that exist in only one language and remove the dangling alternate. A 404 in an hreflang cluster wastes the hint.

  • Pairs only between equivalent documents.
  • Self and return tags.
  • zh-HK for Traditional Chinese aimed at Hong Kong.

Confirm the right URL in a local search

Query the Chinese term and the English term. You want the matching language URL, not a single page trying to rank for both with a mixed title.

If the wrong language ranks, the pairing may be fine and the content may be weak. Fix the copy before you add more annotations.

Questions

Should a Hong Kong-only English site use en-HK?

Yes if the site is clearly for Hong Kong. If the same URL targets many countries, a generic English tag is more honest.

Can one English page pair with many Chinese regions?

Only if those Chinese pages are real equivalents. Do not point en-HK at zh-CN, zh-TW, and zh-HK if they are the same translation reused.
