Google AI Overviews: stay useful when the summary sits above the links
AI Overviews answer some queries before the usual results. The practical response is to be a source the overview can cite and a page still worth opening.
For AI Overviews, publish a citable answer and a reason to open the source that the summary cannot replace.
See which queries now start with a summary
Search the queries you care about from a Hong Kong connection and note where an overview appears. Informational questions show them more often than navigational brand searches.
Record whether your URL is cited. A ranking just under the overview is a different problem from being absent entirely.
Give the overview a passage it can use
Put a direct answer under a question heading, with the condition that makes it true in this market. Overviews compress. A buried answer in paragraph twelve will lose to a page that leads with it.
Keep the detail that does not fit in a summary: the local constraint, the worked example, the limit of the advice. That is why a citation should still earn the click.
- Check queries in the market you serve.
- Lead sections with a quotable answer.
- Save the nuance for the rest of the page.
Do not strip the page to chase the summary
A page written only as a 40-word definition is easy to replace and thin for the human who does click. The overview is a new surface, not the whole document.
If clicks fall while impressions hold, improve the title and the reason to click rather than adding more keywords to the definition.
Questions
Can you opt a page into AI Overviews?
No. There is no inclusion tag. Crawlable, relevant, clearly written pages are eligible to be cited like any other result.
Should you block AI Overviews?
Blocking Google’s crawler also blocks ordinary search. If you want the page in Google, assume it may be summarised. Write it so the summary is accurate.
