Search Console and geotargeting: read Hong Kong queries on purpose

A Hong Kong site can still earn impressions overseas. Geotargeting is mostly a measurement and content decision, not a switch that hides you from the world.

Judge local visibility with a Hong Kong filter, and make the pages unmistakably for this market.

Filter performance by Hong Kong

In Search Console, look at queries and pages with the country filter set to Hong Kong. A page that looks successful in the global total may be ranking for the wrong country.

Compare English and Chinese landing pages inside that filter. You want each language earning the queries it was written for.

Use targeting signals you can defend

A ccTLD or a clear Hong Kong address, local copy, and hreflang are the honest signals. Search Console’s old international targeting report is not a substitute for those.

Do not block overseas users in robots or firewalls just to look more local. You will block crawlers and travelling customers with them.

  • Country filter on the queries that matter.
  • Local content instead of a fake geo switch.
  • No crawler blocks by geography.

Investigate pages that only rank abroad

If a guide ranks in another country and not in Hong Kong, the intent may be generic and the local competition stronger. Add a Hong Kong constraint or accept that the page serves a wider audience.

Branch pages that receive overseas impressions for the brand are fine. Branch pages that try to rank in cities you do not serve are a content bug.

Questions

Can you set a website to target only Hong Kong?

You can use a Hong Kong domain and clearly local content. You should not expect a single setting to suppress every overseas impression or to guarantee local rankings.

Why does a Hong Kong page get overseas traffic?

English queries are international. If the page is useful abroad, it may rank there. Use the country report before calling that a geotargeting error.
