AI citation optimization: earn the mention by being the clearest source

An AI citation is a compressed vote of confidence. The page that gets it is usually the one that states a checkable fact in a sentence a model can lift.

Optimise for citation by publishing one clear, sourced sentence and keeping the rest of the web in agreement with it.

Find the sentence you want repeated

Choose the fact you are willing to see quoted without the paragraph around it. Rewrite until that sentence is true, specific, and hard to misread. Then make sure the heading above it matches.

Citations cluster around definitions, comparisons, original numbers, and clear procedures. They rarely cluster around brand adjectives.

Make the source identifiable

The page should say who published it, what the organisation does, and how this page relates. A citation that cannot tell two similarly named firms apart will attach the fact to the wrong entity.

Use a stable URL. If the fact moves every redesign, older citations point at a redirect or a 404 and the model may keep the outdated copy.

  • One quotable sentence per important claim.
  • Publisher name visible on the page.
  • A URL that will still resolve next year.

Correct the record in public

If answer engines repeat an old price, an old address, or the wrong service area, update the clearest page that states the fact and align the other profiles. The citation follows the consensus of sources, not a single hidden edit.

Keep a short log of claims you care about and check the major answer engines when those claims change.

Questions

What kind of page gets cited most often?

Pages with a direct definition, a dated original figure, or a comparison that states its criteria. Vague thought-leadership essays are harder to cite safely.

Should you add the words ‘cite this page’?

A real citation suggestion, with the title and URL, can help a human. It does not persuade a model. The clarity of the claim does the work.
