Generative engine optimization: being usable as a source

GEO is the work of making your expertise easy for an answer engine to quote without distorting it. It starts where the page already tells the truth clearly.

GEO is the discipline of writing passages a system can quote without guessing what you meant.

Optimise the unit that can be quoted

Answer engines lift sections, not slogans. A page that opens with a definition, names the subject, and states the boundary is easier to reuse than a page that builds toward the point.

Generative engine optimization does not replace titles, links, or a crawlable site. If the page cannot be fetched, it cannot be cited.

Write claims that survive being lifted

A quotable claim names who it is for and where it stops. ‘Most small Hong Kong service firms need a handful of page types, not a large blog’ can stand alone. ‘We are the leading solution’ cannot.

Put evidence next to the claim: a method, a date, a source, or a first-hand constraint. Unsupported superlatives are easy to ignore and risky to repeat.

  • Lead the section with the answer.
  • Name the entity consistently.
  • Keep each claim inside one passage.

Measure citations, not only rankings

Track which queries mention or link to you inside AI answers, alongside ordinary rankings. A page can rank and still be absent from the generated summary if a clearer source is easier to quote.

When you are cited incorrectly, fix the source passage. The model is often compressing a muddy paragraph, not inventing a fact from nothing.

Questions

Is generative engine optimization different from SEO?

It shares the need for crawlable, relevant pages. GEO adds a focus on quotable claims, consistent entities, and whether answer engines actually cite the source.

Can GEO guarantee a mention in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No. You can make a source easier to use. You cannot force a model to select it for every prompt.
